A Community Named After an Ice Age
The Villages at Tule Springs takes its name from the Tule Springs Fossil Beds National Monument next door, a protected site added to the National Park System in 2014 for the ice age fossils, mammoths, camels, ancient lions, preserved in the ground there. It's a genuinely unusual thing to have as a neighbor, a working paleontological site instead of another subdivision or shopping center, and it gives the community a sense of place that a lot of newer developments in the valley don't have.
Two Rugs, Years in Storage, and a Smell That Wouldn't Go Away
We got a call from a homeowner in the Stone Creek community who had just moved into a new home considerably larger than where he'd been living before. That extra space meant room again for two rugs that had spent the last few years sitting in a storage facility. Construction here broke ground in 2017, the first large master planned community to open in North Las Vegas in more than a decade, and the area is still filling in today across more than 1,200 acres and thousands of planned homes, including a dedicated section for residents 55 and older. Does a Musty Smell After Storage Mean My Rug Has Mold?
It's a common concern, and one the homeowner in Stone Creek ran into firsthand. A musty smell coming out of storage almost always points to trapped moisture, whether the rug wasn't completely dry before it was rolled up, the storage unit itself held some humidity, or airflow was simply cut off for long enough that mildew had a chance to take hold in the rug's foundation. That smell doesn't live on the surface, it settles deep in the base of the rug, which is exactly why home remedies like baking soda or fabric sprays only ever mask it temporarily rather than actually solving the problem. Left alone, that same moisture and microbial growth can slowly weaken the rug's foundation over time, eventually leading to dry rot in more serious cases. The fix is a full wash that reaches that foundation directly, followed by thorough, controlled drying, not a surface treatment. Catching it early, the way we did with these two rugs, generally means a full recovery with no lasting damage.
