How Should You Store an Area Rug in Las Vegas?

Storing a rug seems simple. Fold it, wrap it, put it away. In practice, it's one of the most common ways owners unintentionally damage a rug, and the risks are a little different in a dry desert climate than they are in more humid parts of the country.

Here's what actually happens to a rug in storage, and how to do it right.

Why Folding Is a Bigger Problem in Las Vegas Than Elsewhere

Cotton and wool fibers become stiffer in low humidity, which we've covered before in relation to everyday use. That same stiffness makes folded storage riskier here specifically. A rug folded and left for weeks or months in Las Vegas's dry air is more prone to developing visible creases or even cracks along the fold lines than the same rug would be in a humid climate, where fibers stay more flexible even while folded.

Storage Mistakes That Cause Lasting Damage

  1. Folding a rug instead of rolling it, which concentrates stress along a single line rather than distributing it evenly

  2. Storing a rug without cleaning it first, since any food residue, pet dander, or body oils left in the fibers can attract moths and set stains permanently over time

  3. Wrapping a rug in plastic, which traps humidity and can lead to mold or mildew even in a dry climate, since moisture already in the fiber has nowhere to escape

  4. Storing in a garage or shed with major temperature swings, which stresses fibers even further

  5. Leaving a rug in storage for an extended period without inspecting it, allowing a moth infestation or moisture issue to go unnoticed

The Right Way to Store a Rug

A few practices make a meaningful difference. Have the rug cleaned before storing it, since clean fibers are far less attractive to moths and far less likely to develop set in stains over time. Roll it rather than fold it, with the pile facing inward to protect the surface. Wrap it in breathable fabric, like cotton or acid free paper, rather than plastic. Store it somewhere with a stable temperature and away from direct sunlight or major humidity swings, and check on it periodically rather than leaving it untouched for a year or more.

Signs a Stored Rug Has Been Damaged

If you're pulling a rug out of storage after months or years, check for a musty smell, which can indicate mold, mildew, or moth activity, visible creases or stiffness along fold lines, small holes or bald patches, which often indicate moth damage, and any discoloration that wasn't there when it went into storage.

Getting a Rug Ready to Store, or Checking One That's Coming Out

Whether you're preparing a rug for long term storage or unpacking one that's been away for a while, it's worth having it inspected first. We offer a free pre inspection to check for existing damage, fiber condition, and any signs of pests before you store it or bring it back into your home.
