Why Large Rugs Are Riskier to Move Than They Appear
A palace sized or heavy wool rug can weigh well over 100 pounds, and that weight isn't evenly distributed the way it would be with something like a couch or a mattress. Dragging or improperly folding a heavy rug concentrates stress on specific points, particularly the foundation and fringe, which are often the weakest parts of the rug even when the rest of it looks sturdy.
Common Moving Mistakes That Cause Damage

Dragging the rug across the floor instead of lifting it, which stresses the foundation and can tear fibers, especially at the edges

The Right Way to Move a Large Rug
A few practices meaningfully reduce risk. Roll the rug with the pile facing inward, which protects the surface fibers and distributes stress more evenly than folding. Lift and carry rather than drag, ideally with two or more people for anything oversized or heavy. Avoid handling by the fringe entirely, and instead support the rolled body of the rug. If the rug is already fragile, get it assessed before moving rather than after something happens.
Signs a Rug Was Damaged During a Move
After a move, it's worth checking for a few specific things. New creases or cracks that weren't there before, particularly along fold lines if the rug was folded rather than rolled. Fringe that's frayed, torn, or missing sections. Tears or separation along the edges, especially if the rug was dragged. Any new stiffness or a foundation that feels different than it did before.
