Why Do Moths Destroy Wool Rugs From the Back, Not the Front?
If you've never flipped your rug over, you might be missing the first sign of a moth infestation. Most owners assume moth damage looks like a hole chewed straight through the pile. In reality, the damage almost always starts on the back, in the foundation, long before anything is visible from where you're standing.
Here's why that happens, what to look for, and how to stop it before it spreads.
Why Moths Target the Back of the Rug First
Wool moths don't actually eat wool for the fiber itself. Their larvae feed on keratin, a protein found in wool, and they prefer dark, undisturbed areas with little light or foot traffic. That describes the underside of a rug almost perfectly, especially in rooms where furniture sits on top of it or where the rug rarely gets flipped or vacuumed underneath.
By the time larvae eat through to the visible pile on top, they've usually already done significant damage to the foundation below, which is the structural layer holding the entire rug together.
What Moth Damage Actually Looks Like
Moth damage is easy to miss because it doesn't look like a typical stain or wear pattern. Signs to check for include:

Bald or thinning patches in the pile, especially in areas that don't get walked on

Small silky cocoons or webbing tucked into the base of the fibers

A powdery or sandy debris (frass) collecting in the pile or underneath the rug

A musty smell coming from the rug even after it's been vacuumed

Weak spots in the foundation that feel thin or give way when pressed

Some people assume dry desert climates are naturally moth resistant. That's only partly true. Adult moths can still enter a home through open doors, secondhand furniture, or rugs brought in from storage, and once larvae are inside, dry indoor air doesn't stop them from feeding. What dry air does affect is the wool itself, since fibers that are already stressed from low humidity are often more vulnerable to damage once larvae start feeding.
What Makes It Worse
A few common mistakes let moth damage spread further than it needs to:

How Moth Damage Is Actually Treated
Once larvae are active, surface cleaning alone won't solve the problem. Effective treatment usually involves containment to stop the infestation from spreading, thorough removal of larvae, eggs, and frass from deep within the fibers, and coordination with pest control when the infestation extends beyond the rug itself. Any existing damage, like bald patches or weakened foundation, typically needs separate repair work once the infestation is fully addressed.
